Breast Augmentation and Breast Reconstruction
How does Breast Augmentation relate to breast reconstruction?
Breast augmentation may be important if you are considering breast reconstruction for several reasons:
1. To achieve symmetry of the opposite, non reconstructed breast
A meticulously shaped breast reconstruction often results in a reconstructed breast which has a shape which is better than the native, opposite, unoperated breast.
The opposite breast may have significantly less volume or more sagging and require the use of a breast implant to improve the size and shape to better match the reconstructed side. Such a breast implant placement is very similar to a more simple breast augmentation performed for aesthetic reasons only and carries similar benefits and risks. The risks of aesthetic breast implants have been shown to be much lower than those of breast implants used in the reconstruction of a breast lost to cancer.
For symmetry, the opposite breast also may be lifted with a breast lift, or mastopexy, or may be reduced in size using a breast reduction if necessary.
2. To further improve the shape and appearance of a breast reconstructed with your own tissue
In the greast majority of patients more than enough tissue is available from the abdomen or buttock to create a fantastic result in size, shape and appearance. However, certain patients have insufficient tissue to completely fill out the volume required for an optimum result. In some cases breast reconstruction with an implant only is an adequate alternative to using your own tissue.
Reasons may include:
- Previous radiation to the chest wall
- Patient history of implant failure or extrusion after breast reconstruction
- Improved shape and appearance over expander/ implant breast reconstruction alone
- Possibility of smaller implant needed when used with your own tissue versus use of implant alone
